Starting Your Kitchen Design

When beginning the process of creating your ideal kitchen, there are several steps that can be taken to ensure that your vision is executed properly. Initially, you may have a general idea of what you are looking for. Ultimately, however, in order to develop your ideas and allow our designer to fully understand them, it is helpful to:

•           Begin by writing down your basic preferences. For example, think about the types of colours or stains you may want to look into. Consider your current kitchen and document specific elements that you like and dislike. Begin contemplating the direction that you wish to take your kitchen design (I.e. modern, traditional, simple, highly detailed, etc) taking into account the existing design elements in your home.

•           Collect items to act as concrete examples of what you are looking to create. Keep magazine clippings that contain elements that interest you. Take photos of kitchens that you like. Doing so will help you to develop your own ideas and allow our designer to see exactly what you want.

•           The process of creating your kitchen can then truly begin by making an appointment to meet with our designer in our showroom or by in-home consultation. We do recommend first booking a showroom appointment. By viewing our wide range of kitchen, bathroom and fixture displays first hand, you can gain a better understanding of the extensive options that we offer.

Cabinet Care

Exterior

Cabinet doors and exterior panels can be cleaned with a solution of dish soap liquid and warm water. This simple and mild solution is enough to get rid of food smudges, dust, and mild grease build up, yet will not damage the finish of your cabinets. Make sure to dry thoroughly and quickly with a clean cloth to avoid watermarks.

Laminate Countertops

Laminate counters can be damaged by particularly hot items. Do not place hot pots and pans directly on their surface. Instead, use hotplates, hot pads or even heavy towels to protect the surface.

Make sure not to cut directly on the surface of laminate counters. Use cutting boards, stones or plates instead to protect the finish and surface of the counters.

Be careful with water. Too much water flooded onto a laminate counter top can cause problems with the seams. If water gets inside, the substrate can swell and ruin the appearance of the counter tops.

Use mild cleaners or simply soap and warm water to clean spills or stains. Harsh chemicals or highly acidic cleaners can damage the surface of the countertop.

Granite Countertops

The points made above regarding laminate countertops generally apply to granite countertop care. You still want to make sure to protect your granite surface from cutting, excessive heat or water, and from harsh chemical cleaners.

One option that many granite buyers may want to look into is the use of a sealant. Solvent-based sealer can be applied to granite countertops to help keep them looking new. This sealer does not make your countertops impervious to stains, but it does mean that you will have extra time to clean spills before the countertop becomes stained. The life of this sealer varies based on a number of factors, but you can estimate that you will need to reapply the sealer to your countertops every two to three years.

Quartz Countertops

General care of quartz countertops is the same as both laminate and granite. However, because quartz is non-porous, it doesn’t need to be sealed or protected like granite or other natural stone countertops. It comes with a polished surface that acts a protective barrier.
